      <image:title>Home - The Singer as Artist</image:title>
<image:caption>I decided on this name for my own courses a few years ago, as it reflects how important I consider the use of the imagination in singing, to aid interpretation and also technical work. All singers need a solid physical basis to their technical work, but I have found through many years of teaching, that visual imagining of that physical reality can really help a singer find a holistic way of using muscles and releasing tension. Additionally, different students will react to different images, and so having different ways of explaining things will help a student find the way to trigger the right reaction in the body. The use of visual imagination in interpretation may be more easily understood. Just like a painter must see what is to be painted before putting brush to canvas, when we see the scene we are singing we always find more colour in the voice. If we let the text lead us, we shape our phrases more successfully. That’s the starting point for the courses which involve singing tuition, coaching, movement work and group sessions. We have an annual residency at the wonderful Le Mas d’Arjac in the Aveyron, southwest region of France, with legendary hospitality and wonderful food. I’m joined there by Nigel Foster, Director of the London Song Festival, as coach and pianist; and by Peter Bramley, Director of Pants on Fire Theatre Company as movement and drama teacher. There is a weekend at Jackdaws in Somerset every year where I will be joined this year by Nigel Foster, and next year I hope to announce another exciting collaboration – watch this space…</image:caption>

<image:title>Biography - Alison Wells was born in Yorkshire and originally trained as a pianist. She read Mathematics and Music at London University and then spent a year at the Royal Academy of Music, after which she began her vocal studies. She made her South Bank debut in the Park Lane Group’s January Series, and in the same year sang the Governess in the Turn of the Screw and took part in Elisabeth Schwarzkopf’s Masterclasses at the Wigmore Hall. Since then she has appeared in all the major London concert halls and in many festivals both at home and abroad.</image:title>
<image:caption>A large part of Alison Wells’ work is in the field of contemporary music, and she has sung with London Sinfonietta, Matrix, Lontano, Music Projects/London, Composers’ Ensemble, Kokoro, Psappha, Gemini, Ensemble Corrente, Apartment House, the french ensemble 2e2m, the Schoenberg Ensemble and ASKO in Amsterdam, and Champ d’Action in Antwerp. She has broadcast many times for Radio 3. Alison has recently given performances of Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’s Miss Donnithorne’s Maggot at King’s Place, London, the Holywell Music Rooms in Oxford and at the St Magnus International Festival in Orkney to great acclaim. The DVD of her performance with a film directed by Peter Richardson is available on ARC Recordings. She commissioned and gave the premiere of Judith Bingham’s Mary Anning and Colin Riley’s new version of Science Fictions, and both of these pieces can be found on the same DVD, which was described as stunning on Radio 3’s CD Review. Opera Magazine described Alison Wells’s “marvellous gifts and vocal artistry on wonderful display”. In 2014 she gave the European premiere of John Harbison’s song cycle The Right to Pleasure as part of Lontano’s 5th American Music Festival. Other notable recent performances have been Le marteau sans maitre with the Warehouse Ensemble in the Boulez in Birmingham day; the premiere of “Krazy Kat” by Joanna Lee in which she plays Offissa Bull-Pup; and a recital for voice and clarinet at Brunel University.</image:caption>

<image:title>Teaching - Alison has always enjoyed and been committed to teaching alongside her performing commitments. She began teaching in Cambridge in 1981 and has built up a private studio of students singing in opera, recital, oratorio and ensembles such as the BBC Singers, Monteverdi Choir, The Sixteen, I Fagiolini and Tenebrae.</image:title>
<image:caption>Alison was a member of the vocal studies at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance for 15 years from 2003-2018 and is a now a professor in the vocal studies department at the Royal College of Music. Alison’s graduates have gone on to further studies at other British Conservatoires as well as the Dutch National Opera Academy, Flanders Opera Studio, Boston Conservatory, Welsh International Academy of Voice, and to Glyndebourne Chorus, Glyndebourne Young Artists, Garsington Young Artists, and many professional ensembles including the BBC Singers, Monteverdi Choir, Tenebrae, the Sixteen. Alison’s teaching is based on a firm but flexible support system from the breath and support muscles of the core and back allied to a healthy vocalisation without strain in the larynx. She is endlessly fascinated by the power and resonance of the human voice, and how our relationship to, and understanding of text and character can bring out colours and dynamics that enhance our performance of the music.</image:caption>
